The 15th Annual Mississippi QSO Party is this weekend and some rare counties are planned to be activated.  The following was sent to me by Frank, K4FMH:
The Fox Mike Hotel Portable Ops Team will activate Issaquena County, Mississippi and Sharkey County, Mississippi on April 7-8th, 2018 as part of the MS QSO Party: 1400Z April 7 and ends at 0200Z April 8 (9AM to 9PM local time on Saturday).

The team includes Frank K4FMH, Thomas N5WDG, Glen KW5GP, and Teri AC5YL.
We plan to be in Mayersville MS (Issaquena) from 9am to 1pm and Rolling Fork MS (Sharkey) from 2pm to 9pm when the Party ends. The bands and rules for the 15th MS QSO Party are at

We plan to operate SSB and possibly FT8 (depending on band cx) with phone power from 100W to 500W with two phone stations operating, all under the K4FMH call sign. There are NO licensed amateurs in Issaquena and only 12 in Sharkey, making both exceptionally rate counties for DX entities. For the ARRL Grid Square Contest during 2018, the grid for our location in Issaquena is EM42lv while that for our location site in Sharkey is EM42nv. This might be one of the few chances during 2018 to work either square.

Again, for more information on the MS QSO Party go to

***Also, Don’t forget MARA’s Memphis Freefest is coming up on 14 April –just 10 days out!  It’s free admission or as Brother Bluto says “it don’t cost nothin’!” and all drawing ticket sales proceeds go to charity.

Just a reminder…  We have several great events coming up in the ARRL TN Section during the rest of August and in September.

August 20 & 21:  Southeastern Division Convention (Huntsville Hamfest– AL)

Not quite in TN, but our southern neighbors will be putting on a great Hamfest this weekend, with a LOT of folks from the TN Section heading down for a weekend of fun and information! Many great forums, a flea market, and, of course, a large assortment of vendors for some serious shopping. See details at

August 21: Marshall County Amateur Radio Society Meeting

The next regular meeting of the Marshall County Amateur Radio Society will be held this Sunday, August 21st, at 2:00 PM, in the conference room of the Marshall County Office of Emergency Management at the Hardison Office Annex, 230 College Street, in Lewisburg. Coffee and a snack will be provided following the business portion of the meeting. See the attached document, or click for additional details:

Sunday, August 28: Cedars of Lebanon 36th Annual Hamfest

If you are looking for a Hamfest a little closer to home (aka within TN state lines), please visit the Short Mountain Repeater Club Cedars of Lebanon Hamfest. The SMRC Hamfest will be on Sunday, August 28th, in their usual location (Cedars of Lebanon State Park) with a lot of fun and many great vendors to visit. Learn more at:

August 30 – September 8: Technician License Class offered by Vanderbilt University Amateur Radio Club

If you would like to earn your Technician Class amateur (ham) radio license, join the Vanderbilt University Amateur Radio Club (VUARC) for a two-week prep course on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Aug. 30 – Sept. 8. Please see the attached flyer for more details or click:

September 4 – 5: TN QSO Party

“The Tennessee QSO Party is an annual amateur radio event which takes place on either the first or second Sunday of September.  All amateur radio operators in the great state of Tennessee are encouraged to participate as antennas around the world rotate and point to the volunteer state. The Tennessee QSO Party is hosted by the Tennessee Contest Group.  Each year tens of thousands of QSOs occur between Tennessee amateur radio operators and hams worldwide. “* Plaques are awarded for category winners.  (* from the TN QSO Party website: ) See details at:

September 23-24: W4DXCC DX and Contest Convention “SEDCO”

In Pigeon Forge, TN. “The SouthEastern DX and Contesting Organization (SEDCO) is a non-profit organization, founded for one reason-  to bring DXers and Contesters together in fellowship.” The convention will feature a full day Ham Radio Bootcamp, which is the perfect venue for new and experienced hams to come and learn how to build an HF station and how to use it!  The second day features many interesting speakers, and time to visit the TOP equipment manufacturers that will be present. Visit the website for more details and the event program.  “Countdown to W4DXCC”, the event flyer, can be found at:

Contest Season Refresher

For those who are into contesting, the fall and winter months are packed with contests of different types. H. Ward Silver, N0AX at ARRL has put together a small quiz to help participants get ready for this season’s activities. The quiz is posted on the ARRL site.

He also reminds everyone that “if you’re not a contest aficionado, most major contests use only one mode and 12, 17 and 30 meters bands are entirely contest-free and wide open!”
