AuxComm Basic Training


Calling all amateur radio operators!  Start your radio year right with AuxComm Basic Training, sponsored by Cheatham Co. ARES.  Anyone with interest is invited!  Feel free to forward this invitation to other amateur radio operators or organizations.  Post far and wide!

This class is a modified version of the nationally taught course from N3ORX Hank Hoebler (bio below)!  It will teach amateur radio operators how we can best fit in with our served agencies.  It will cover areas of interest to new and old Amateur Operators, and will focus on understanding working within the Communications Unit (COMU) in the Incident Command System (ICS) from the local to state to federal levels.  Some of the exciting topics will be:

  • Overview of ICS (Incident Command System)
  • ICS Forms for COMU (Communications Unit)
  • How to write a Comms Plan
  • What is AuxComm
  • Where do I fit in?
  • Best Practices and Lessons Learned

N3ORX Hank Hoebler, Jr. is currently a consultant to the Department of Homeland Security/Office of Emergency Communications.  He is a co-creator of the AuxComm course and a co-author of the AuxFog, in addition to his consulting work on various projects such as FirstNet, Amtrak communications, Tribal Interoperability, Next Gen 911, and others.

He is the retired Chief of Operations for TEMA, where he worked for 20 years.  While at TEMA he was the leading force in bringing Amateur Radio to the fore as an Auxiliary Component of state emergency communications.

Prior to moving to TN and working for TEMA, he served 30 years in the U.S. Navy as a Cryptologic Technician in worldwide assignments providing Intelligence Collection and Analysis expertise to Command and National Authorities

Hank is an Extra Class Amateur Radio operator, callsign N3ORX.  He has served the past 8 years as an Assistant Director in the Delta Division of the ARRL, has served as a DEC, EC, and AEC within ARES and is currently the EC for Montgomery County.  While at TEMA, he was the Assistant RACES officer for the state.  He has extensive experience with both Army and Navy Mars.  Hank’s primary interests, currently, are with HF digital modes and with Digital Voice modes, except when six meters is open, then he concentrates on SSB voice, trying to make contact with the last two states he needs for Six Meter Worked All States Voice.
